Description
Dengue is found in tropical and sub-tropical climates worldwide, mostly in urban and semi-urban areas. Classic Dengue infection is characterized by a sudden onset of fever, intense headache, myalgia, arthralgia and rash. Early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below1%.
Dengue is endemic in at least 100 countries in Asia, the Pacific, the Americas, Africa, and the Caribbean. Today about 2.5 billion people, or 40% of the world’s population, live in areas where there is a risk of dengue transmission.
Primary infection, which usually results in Dengue Fever (DF), causes lgM antibodies to increase to a detectable level in 3 to 5 days after the onset of fever. Distinguishing Dengue lgG and lgM antibodies help in diagnosing primary and secondary infections. NS1 antigen is common to all dengue serotypes and can be used to detect either primary or secondary infections. It is more accurate in the first seven days.
